Strong Points

Taken together, the Kung Fu Panda trilogy has a wonderfully healthy and positive adoption storyline. Po initially does not know he is adopted. Mr. Ping tells Po about how he found, raised, and adopted him. Po then meets his birth father and learns about his personal history and panda culture. He is amazed to meet a community of individuals who look like him. Then, he integrates all aspects of his identity into a cohesive whole, while he watches his two dads successfully navigate their new relationship with each other.

Not only does Po learn about panda culture, but he also shares his Kung Fu culture and his noodle shop culture with the pandas. Together the community comes together, celebrating and learning from each other with each member also drawing strength from their individual uniqueness. There’s a lot of mutual respect and assistance: Po saves everyone and then they all save him.

The film does not shy away from the awkwardness and mistrust that Mr. Ping and Li Shen initially feel towards each other, but shows them working through that uncomfortable start to a place of trusting and humble relationship. Mr. Ping ultimately acknowledges that he thought that having Li Shen in Po’s life would mean less of Po’s love for Mr. Ping, but now, Mr. Ping realizes that it means more love for Po.
